President Basescu visits Romanians in Serbia

The President of Romania Traian Basescu paid a visit to Serbia yesterday. He took this opportunity to point that both Romania and Serbia had been harmed by nationalism in the past, as well as by extremism and politicians' inability to communicate.

The head of state said he was "pleased to visit the "Our Serbia" Summer School held in Bajina Basta, Serbia. Together with the Serbian President Boris Tadic he opened Romania's Day. The Romanian official suggested that, starting the following year, the same event should take place in Romania too.

President Tadic started his speech by calling the Romanian President "dear Traian, dear friend", claiming that the two nations had been friends in the course of centuries. He invoked an old saying arguing that Romania had two friends: the Black Sea and Serbia. Romania is our friend, the Serbian President concluded, but we have got no sea, unfortunately. He argued that, every time he had visited Romania, he had felt like at home and he wished the Romanian President should feel the same in Serbia.

Romania has been remarked as an important supporter of Belgrade's Euro-Atlantic integration and of Serbia's territorial integrity as well, as Romanian officials have not admitted the Kosovo independence.
