Pro-autonomy MEPs reach Romania

Yesterday while in Targu Mures, the reformed bishop Laszlo Tokes accused Romania once again of discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities. It occurred during the first meeting of the European Free Alliance held in Romania.

The Magyar born MEP's accusation is coming just when 6 members of the latter Alliance are paying a visit to our country. 2 of these members are well-known supporters of autonomy in the Parliament of Europe: Tatiana Zdanoka from Latvia, the Basque Jose Luis Linazasoro. They attended the conference together with Laszlo Tokes.

After having claimed in Brussels that the Romanian Orthodox Church was in the habit of discriminating religious minorities, the reformed bishop criticized the Catholic Church yesterday, arguing that the Vatican policy was harmful, because it was more concerned with spreading Catholicism in Romania than with protecting the Magyar Catholics.

The Catholic Church hasn't reacted so far. But the Romanian Orthodox Church expressed indignation at such accusations: "The constant interest of bishop Laszlo Tokes and of the representatives of Greek-Catholic Church in Romania in denigrating both the Romanian Orthodox Church and Romania abroad - by unfairly claiming that the latter are having common action to harm religious and ethnic minorities in the latter country - can but contribute to the degradation of the relations between religious cults in Romania."
