ElBaradei fears Al-Qaeda may get radioactive material from Romania

Mohammed AlBaradei, chief of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), fears the Al-Qaeda is plotting a nuclear or radioactive attack and he expresses concern about the trafficking in radioactive materials from Romania, Ukraine, Kazahstan and Uzbekistan. Mediafax Agency informs that he has told in his interview to the Al-Hayat daily that a terrorist attack by the Al-Qaeda in a capital such as London or Cairo would be a nightmare much greater than the attacks in September 11, 2001.

According to the IAEA official, many organizations of the Al-Qaeda kind can get nuclear weapons. Still he opines they are not on trade and terrorists are more likely to grab radioactive resources. The AIEA official is also concerned about information on attempts to do trafficking in radioactive materials. He highlights that each and every year hundreds of people are arrested because they make such attempts. And he adds most such cases emerge in ex Soviet and East European states like Kazahstan, Uzbakistan, Ukraine and Romania. (...) (A.G.)
