The President of Romania Traian Basescu is to arbitrate today's talks between the Romanian government's representatives and the leaders of 6 large union confederations. The 2008 budget is the issue at stake because unionists are dissatisfied that their amendments weren't taken into account. It is anyway unclear how their objections can still be considered, since the head of state already promulgated the budget law in December 21, 2007.

According to the sources invoked by NewIn Agency, the Romanian PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu won't attend the talks. There is information that the government will be represented by the labor minister Paul Pacuraru and the economy minister Varujan Vosganian, together with representatives of the National Pension Agency and the Labor Force Agency.

Minister Pacuraru claims unionists are lacking information, since some of the amendments already included in the budget law draft were on the list of claims they brought to Cotroceni Palace in December 28, 2007.

As far as the cut on the contribution to the unemployment fund is concerned, the minister says this is compensated by the increase of funds settled for "active measures", such as subventions for the employers who employ young people or other disadvantaged categories of unemployed or the credits on subventioned interest.

The labor minister also argues that the cut on the pension fund is going to effect starting with 2009. Therefore the minister says he hasn't actually got his own topics for today's meeting due to start at 11:00 a.m. (...) (A.I.)
