Ex president of Romanian Emil Constantinescu demanded Romanian president Traian Basescu to declare his groups of interests and make clear his connection to the ex Communist Secret Service. Constantinescu said in news conference: "I'm demanding Traian Basescu to declare his groups of interests, to declare he is no longer indebted to them and to declare he doesn't intend to run for the following presidential mandate. He should save himself for a mandate later on, for he is young. I'm demanding him to say farewell to groups of interests right now. One can't be a mediator pointing to groups of interests connected to the government, but omitting his own groups of interests. If he does this, I will help him." He also asked president Basescu to make clear his connection to the ex Communist Secret Service and "not to avoid answers to straight questions about collaboration with various departments of the Communist Secret Service in various periods".

Communist origin

As for candidacy in presidential elections to come in 2009, Constantinescu said: "First there must be shaped a portrait of a president a European Romania wishes. My view is in total opposition to the president-player concept, because it is anti-constitutional in Romania, just as it is anachronic in Europe." (...)

He also asked Basescu to keep his electoral promises. "So far he has done nothing he promised to do, apart from noisy teams and populist messages. In his campaign there were some clear assignments, such as the fight of corruption, which has achieved nothing." Constantinescu also claimed that the Prosecutor's Office and the Court of Accounts should investigate the funds Basescu had used in the electoral campaign, for "he had the largest funds." (R.G.)
