Campaigning Basescu
We have unfortunately got the occasion to point out that this daily's estimations were right. The five parties who suspended Basescu were unable to mobilize the electorate and this is why he won the referendum. Coincidence has it that the score is relatively equal to the one he got in the 2004 presidential elections. Just like in 2004, there are 5,5 million Romanians who voted for him. It is something like between one third and one fourth of electors, as estimated...   (50 afisari)

Appeasing Serbia
This month has been a bad one for the cause of human rights in Europe, as Serbia was allowed to begin its six-month presidency of the Council of Europe, the Continent's oldest political body. With Serbia at the helm, the Council, which aims to promote human rights and the rule of law, is now overseen by a state that thumbs its nose at the Genocide Convention and harbors an indicted war crimes suspect, former Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic. Moreover, the European...   (29 afisari)

Basescu: I won't negotiate on Romanians' interests
Traian Basescu, Romania's suspended President, learnt the news of his referendum victory while in the building of the PD (Democrat Party), from where he heard the estimation on the outcome of Saturday's referendum. Right after the exit polls were released, Traian Basescu together with leaders of the PD and the PLD (Liberal Democrat Party) went down the stairs triumphantly, he delivered a speech and heartily welcomed about 100 supporters...   (34 afisari)

Saddening referendum
Those political groups supporting the suspension or dismissal of President Traian Basescu showed listlessness and or faked enthusiasm in the referendum day.
Mircea Geoana, leader of the PSD (Social-Democrat Party), had two reasons to be sad: first because he was defeated in the confrontation with Basescu and secondly because he was dumped by all the top party members, even by the group in Cluj who had promoted him to head the party.
The PNL (National Liberal Party)...   (25 afisari)

Romanians protested in Rome and Madrid
The Romanians wishing to vote in the two poll stations housed by the Romanian Embassy in Madrid forced the entry into the Embassy courtyard last Saturday evening when the authorities announced the voting time was up. The protestors claimed that, had there been two more hours available, all the Romanians crowding in front of the Embassy could have placed their ballots.
About 500 demonstrators cried out their support for the Romanian President Traian...   (21 afisari)

Barroso congratulates winner
Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, congratulated Romanian President Traian Basescu yesterday for his victory in Saturday's referendum. But he also took the opportunity to demand Bucharest authorities to continue reforms, expressing hope that the outcome would allow Romania, a full right EU member, to make progress with the necessary reforms, with the independence of Justice and the fight against corruption in particular.

Saturday's referendum in international press
Saturday's referendum hasn't passed unnoticed in the international press. There are reports on the outcome favorable to Romanian President Traian Basescu, but there is also mentioned the small number of Romanians who went voting. The prevailing idea is that incertitude will continue to prevail in Romanian politics.
The Associated Press announces in a commentary published by the International Herald Tribune too that "Romanian president survives...   (28 afisari)

Liberal split
Storm has reached the Liberals after President Basescu's referendum victory. 74,32% of Romanians who participated in last Saturday's referendum were against the dismissal of the President, whereas only 24,9% voted for it. According to the Central Electoral Office, only 44,05% of Romanian citizens with the right to vote went to the poll stations.
This is why Liberal Ludovic Orban, a minister of transport, said he would ask that his party should leave the government. After...   (40 afisari)

BERD: Romanians dissatisfied with the state of economy
Over 50% of Romanians believe the state of Romanian economy worsened after 1989 and there are only 30% who agree that after the fall of Communism the world of politics improved. The data is part of an opinion poll by the BERD.
The research is actually an analysis of attitude, welfare, impact of economic and social changes and effects of criminality and corruption on the population of the 28 states where the BERD operates....   (19 afisari)
