Americans are complicit in Israel's actions in Gaza

JUDITH KOLOKOFF

Like the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, Israel's bombardment and invasion of the Gaza Strip is illegal, immoral, racist and brutal. Israeli propagandists justify the destruction of Palestinian civil society, including mass killings, through lies and the dehumanization of an entire people.

I am an 80-year-old American Jew deeply informed by the Jewish values that I assimilated while growing up in a Jewish ghetto in Chicago. As a child, I watched my neighbors go off to fight Franco in Spain, organize trade unions in packing houses and the steel industry, and fight Jim Crow. I learned that being Jewish meant you cared about the lives of the oppressed and worked for human rights and equality for all people.

These are the Jewish values that I have embraced and that led me to work as a human rights activist all of my life.

Today, as I watch the catastrophe that unfolds in Gaza under the guns of the Israeli air force and army, I wonder how we can commit such atrocities against another people. Where has our Jewish commitment to justice gone? I find myself saddened beyond description, and filled with anger and shame.

In the last week, Israel has killed more than 500 Palestinians and injured thousands more through brutal attacks on the besieged territory of Gaza. This assault could not have occurred without the transfer of billions of dollars of U.S. military aid to Israel, helping it to buy F-16s and Apache helicopters that are now dropping bombs on the most densely populated territory in the world.

The current attack has followed a 15-month siege of the Gaza Strip, which has created a humanitarian catastrophe of dire proportions for 1.5 million residents. Israel has sealed entry points into Gaza, vastly reducing and often entirely shutting off the delivery of food, medicines, fuel, cooking gas, and other supplies needed to maintain the barest necessities of life.

The World Health Organization has reported that half of Gaza's ambulances are out of commission. Hospitals have no medicine and very little equipment to deal with the life-threatening injuries that thousands of Gazans have sustained in the bombardment.

Israel claims that its attack on Gaza is necessary for self-defense against Hamas rocket attacks on southern Israel, and that Palestinians have only themselves to blame for what is happening to them. In fact, Israeli attacks on Gaza have been a consistent aspect of the military occupation that Israel implemented after the 1967 war, and that still continues today. Israel's violations of international law include the establishment of massive Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories and the building of the Separation Wall and Jewish-only highways across and throughout Palestinian land.

Gazans, in particular, have been completely surrounded by Israeli military closures to the point where they are almost entirely cut off from the rest of the world.

These human rights violations have destroyed Palestinian economic infrastructure, making the daily lives of Palestinians unbearable.

As Americans, we bear responsibility for what we are witnessing today in Gaza. Our government's policies, our military and economic aid to Israel, and our unequivocal support for Israel's occupation have led to the massacre that is taking place.

As an American -- and as a Jew -- I cannot be silent in these circumstances.

We Americans must demand our leaders condemn Israel's actions against the people of Gaza and insist on an immediate ceasefire and on the opening of Gaza's borders to allow the entrance of humanitarian aid. We must demand the cessation of U.S. economic and military aid to Israel.

Silence is complicity.
