August 7 - President Mikheil Saakashvili ordered Georgian troops to cease fire.[51][52]
According to Georgian military, despite the declared ceasefire, fighting intensified.[53][54] Hours after the declaration of the ceasefire, in a televised address, Mikheil Saakashvili vowed to restore Tbilisi's control by force over what he called the "criminal regime" in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and reinforce order.[54]

August 8 - During the night and early morning, Georgia launched a military offensive to surround and capture the capital of separatist Republic of South Ossetia, Tskhinvali[55] thus breaking the terms of the 1992 ceasefire and crossing into the security zone established therein.[56] According to a Russian military official, over ten Russian peacekeepers were killed during the attack.[57] The heavy shelling, which included Georgian rockets being fired into South Ossetia[58] left parts of the capital city in ruins, which Russian government sources claimed amounted to genocide. The news of the shelling was extensively covered by Russian media prior to the military reaction that followed, as Russia claimed to have responded in defense of South Ossetians against what they called "a genocide by Georgian forces."[59] Russia claimed up to 2,000 dead in Tskhinvali following the shelling.[60] The extent of civilian casualties was later disputed in a number of sources.[61] President Saakashvili later claimed that the Russian side has deployed tanks into the disputed region before he gave the order for Georgian forces to attack.[62] At Russia’s request, the United Nations Security Council held consultations on 7 August at 11pm (US EST time), followed by an open meeting at 1.15am (US EST time) on 8 August, with Georgia attending. During consultations, Council members discussed a press statement that called for an end to hostilities. They were unable, however, to come to a consensus.[63] In the morning, Georgia announced that it had surrounded the city and captured eight South Ossetian villages.[64] An independent Georgian TV station announced that Georgian military took control of the city.[65]

August 4 - Russia accuses Georgia of using excessive force in South Ossetia after the Russian-backed rebels said Georgian artillery had killed at least six people.

*A few days later Georgia acknowledged artillery attacks.

August 7 - The head of Russian peacekeepers in the region is quoted as saying that Georgia and South Ossetian separatists agreed on a truce until they hold Russian-mediated talks.

Russia later says that Georgia's military operation in South Ossetia shows Tbilisi cannot be trusted and NATO should reconsider its plans to admit Georgia.

*Talks between Tbilisi and the separatists fall through in part due to the continuing military operation by Georgia in violation of the truce. Georgia moves its Czech-made SPGH M77 "Dana" 152-mm heavy self-propelled howitzers to the border of South Ossetia, as seen on CNN. BBC and CNN also show Georgian army BM-21 "Grad" rocket-propelled artillery vehicles shelling Tskhinvali - the capital of South Ossetia. Ten Russian peacekeepers, stationed in the province under a UN mandate, are killed in the artillery attack and two more die from injuries by the end of Friday, August 8.

August 8 - Georgia says its forces have "freed" the greater part of the Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali and accuses Russia of conducting a "large-scale" operation against Georgia.

*In addition to the killed peacekeepers, Georgia's assault results in as many as 1,400 casualties among Russian citizens in South Ossetia by Friday afternoon (August 8). Russia responds by sending some 150 tanks and other armored vehicles of the 58th Tank Army to South Ossetia and attacking Georgia's military installations across the country using aircraft. CNN footage shows Su-25 ground attack jets. However, it is impossible to tell whether they are Russian or Georgian, since both countries manufacture and use this aircraft type."
