Yesterday while in Sweden the President of Romania Traian Basescu argued that, given the effects of the international evolution in business, Romania modified the inflation target for 2008 from 4,5% to 5,5%, adding that 3,8% was the estimation for the future.(...)
It is to be mentioned that the figures President Basescu read out yesterday differ from the ones released by the National Statistics Institute, the National Bank of Romania and the National Committee for Prognosis. According to the National Statistics Institute, inflation reached 6,75% last year.
On the other hand, President Basescu proceeded to a "pragmatical" introduction to Romanian economy for the Swedish businessmen attending the event. He mentioned there had been economic growth in Romania in the last years, outlining that to keep inflation under control was the country's priority for the time being. (G.M.)
