He is now on the verge of collapsing because of the bill, since his own colleagues are threatening to sack him. The PSD group in Cluj and top members like Ion Iliescu, Miron Mitrea and Adrian Nastase are denying the PSD leader and therefore he is left on his own to support an initiative that he himself distrusted in the beginning. But an extraordinary congress, more and more often invoked lately, is almost impossible to summon because of the requirements set in the status.
Still Geoana can get away with it also due to the approaching elections (the election of MEPs and then the local and general elections), since there is no time left for the party to search for and impose a new leader. This is why the Liberals are relaxed, the UDMR (Democrat Union of Magyars in Romania) thinks the bill will fail, the Democrats and the Liberal-Democrats want to come up with a bill themselves, since the PSD can't manage.
Party status and elections are a bless
Mircea Geoana is right now under much critique because of lacking authoritativeness and indetermination. He is facing a group wishing to give him the sack and appoint a new president for the PSD. Party spokesman Cristian Diaconescu and more recently Victor Ponta are the main aspirants. Because of the many sides within the party, none of the two can be sure of success in case of congress. And there is also the fact that a congress is impossible to summon because of the party status. According to the regulation, a congress may be arranged only if 15 local party branches ask for it or if all the members of the National Permanent Committee resign. Since neither the Nastase side, nor the Iliescu one or the group in Cluj and Miron Mitrea can't persuade 15 branches into demanding a congress, Mircea Geoana is very little likely to be sacked by congress. Furthermore, there are PSD sources who claim that, just one month before the election of MEPs in Romania, no one is interested in making the PSD look busy with domestic disputes. (...)
