Negotiations for farce
-- After two weeks of amazing talks and no conclusions, the making of new parliamentary majority seems unachievable. The presidential proposal managed to enrage politicians even more and no solutions to diminish crisis seem visible.
President Traian Basescu is the only one at advantage after the talks of between Romanian parties. He was in the public eye as long as the negotiations lasted. Yesterday he "became aware" of political leaders' inability to find a solution to achieve new majority, he did some more critique of some ministers and of the PM and he claimed to be a supporter of the government! As adept of the PNL (National Liberal Party) and of the Executive, he asked for new parliamentary majority!
The falsity of the presidential request comes in contradiction with the limits he set to the unyielding talks: he already proposed a government to be made up of representatives of the PNL, the PD (Democrat Party) and the PLD (Liberal Democrat Party) and support for a different PM. The Democrats announced they would have no talks with the PSD (Social-Democrat Party) and the emergence of another solution seems impossible. The only thing the President could do yesterday was innocently point to the incompetence of parties, government and probably of everyone, except for the only thing that everyone has got the power of votes.
Government is not functional
The President was extremely critical of the government, claiming this institution was not functional. At the end of yesterday's consultations he presented parties' views. He reached no conclusion and made no estimation of the outcome. His most insistent wish to disclose the stenograms of his very brief talk to the PNL delegation, because he was displeased that Liberal 'sources' told that the head of state wanted to make the government collapse at any costs. The President mentioned: "If I get the consent of anyone from the delegation that has been here, I would like to unveil the stenograms to the public because the stenograms show how the PNL works: by lies. Uncovered lies and misinformation used by taking advantage that they can send messages." He outlined: "The official proposal is on the consolidation of this government, of these parties, of this party, the PNL, who is in power and under blackmail."
The government's incapacity
There are three elements that the government is lacking: efficiency, full legitimacy, because the PNL didn't run in elections under this name, and transparent parliamentary support, the President argued. He reminded the parliamentary support the government was enjoying was of only 18-19%. He said he was concerned about how the government was working and listed some persisting difficulties in health and in the assimilation of EU funds. He also claimed the foreign affairs policy was incoherent and reminded about foreign and defense ministers' statements against national interest, claiming such statements made Romania "ridiculous".
"Who must leave?"
As for PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu, the President criticized him overtly because of having supported the initiative meant to suspend and dismiss him. He commented: "Mr. Tariceanu was one of those political leaders to join Corneliu Vadim Tudor, Ion Iliescu and Verestoy Attila during the campaign meant to suspend and dismiss the President of Romania. Moreover, right after my suspension, the PM's message was that the President had to leave. People chose the opposite. Then who must leave?"
"Decision is up to the PNL and the PM and next to the PSD
Basescu made a synthetic presentation of what he made out of his talks with parties: the PSD wants to continue as non transparent in power and continue the blackmail against the PM as well, the PNL dismisses the chance to no longer be blackmailed and to achieve a right center solution to govern Romania, choosing to continue under the control of the Patriciu-Hrebenciuc-Fenechiu group. According to the President, the Conservatives, the Democrat Union of Magyars in Romania and national minorities are benevolent and want a solution. The President scored: "The decision is up to the PNL and the PM and next to the PSD." He concluded that the way the MPs would vote for or against the bill against the government would prove him right.
