Blaga -Schengen discrimination
-- Internal Affairs Minister thinks there are two categories of Romanians: the rich and the poor * Businessmen will be allowed to travel abroad with no invitation, whereas the other common mortals need such document * The Internal Affairs Ministry seems to be stepping back and correct the mistake so that the passports of those who stay abroad longer than allowed would no longer be sacked, but reach database and respective citizens would be forbidden to leave Romania
The scandal caused by customs officials retaining passports at the Romanian border is continuing. Public opinion has expressed a roughly negative reaction to such regulation. Moreover, if the order released by the Internal Affairs Minister is not modified by October 1, from this day on people who want to travel abroad will also need invitation, apart from the documents usually requested. When learning such news Romanian businessmen have been vehemently protesting and demanded that such measure should not be applied on the businessmen category at least. Representatives of the Romanian Businessmen Association met with Executive representatives and it seems the former will win. Latest information says that Internal Affairs Minister Vasile Blaga has agreed that businessmen should not be asked to show invitation abroad when traveling beyond the Romanian border. They also say Blaga has agreed that documents to prove businessman status should be released by Romanian institutions so that Romanian businessmen "would not beg for invitations abroad". But this causes real discrimination. Businessmen are given a preferential status as compared to common citizens. The latter will have to beg for invitations abroad, unlike businessmen. The rich one may travel, but the poor may not. After much critique from all sides, the Internal Affairs Ministry seems to be stepping back to correct the mistake. Therefore Ministry staff are analyzing eventual modification of procedure on those who stay abroad longer than allowed: their passports should no longer be suspended, but they should reach database and be forbidden to travel abroad till they come up with the right documents. But things are unchanged for the time being and passports get "confiscated" by customs authorities, which sets limits to the right to free movement. (D.E.I.)
