Liberals promise loyalty to Tariceanu
Premier Tariceanu convoked yesterday the heads of the PNL (the National Liberal Party) branches to personally check out what are the organizations that are loyal to him and what are those he can count on no longer. The calling together was at least 24 hrs after Theodor Stolojan's announcing his availability to get involved in a possible changing process within the party. The meeting took place at Casa Dante, close to President Traian Basescu's residence. Before the meeting, the liberal local leaders "flooded" the news agencies with statements pro and con Tariceanu or Stolojan. Although, all those questioned said, unanimously, that Stolojan was welcome in PNL. The Central leadership was also divided in two camps. The replacement of Tariceanu from the head of the Executive appears to be an operation more complicated than it was believed at first. For the time being and from his position, Tariceanu keeps under lock and key the administrative, social, economic and political resources, which assures him the control over the party. In fact, its reversions over the resignation had in view this aspect precisely: to maintain his PM chair at any rate. So that the head of the Government can gunboat negotiate with the local leaders.
Radiography of the PNL branches shows that the balance of power inside PNL is slightly bending favorably to Tariceanu, if we exclude the organizations that adopted a wait and see policy. Under these circumstances, it is expected that the PM use a vehement discourse sprinkled with threats against the undecided. However he announced he would not be "easy" to toss down from the head of the party. The PM's determination is praiseworthy, taking into consideration his hesitating and inconsistent performance. Still, there is a precedent Tariceanu has to take into account. It's about the Iliescu precedent. He was also irrevocably promised to be voted as chairman of the party. (Mihai TOADER)
Liberal leadership, between Tariceanu and Stolojan
Just like in the party's local branches, the liberals at the center have different opinions on Theodor Stolojan's coming back to the lead of the party. While some close people to the Prime Minister, such as ministers Mona Musca or Gheorghe Flutur, welcome a possible involvement of Stolojan in the party's affairs or in future political projects, there are also critical voices in the National Liberal Party (Rom. PNL). Such is the case of Ludovic Orban, who categorically rejects any approach of Stolo to the Liberal Party.
All these reactions only one day after the ex-president of the National Liberal Party, Theodor Stolojan - actual presidential counselor stated he was ready to get involved in a possible changing process in PNL, if the county organizations of the party appreciated he might play a role in such an action. Yesterday, Premier Tariceanu also called for a meeting with the leaders of the branches of the party as he wanted to check out to what extent he benefited of their confidence, following his latest political evolutions.
Tariceanu stands firm
PNL chairman, Calin Popescu Tariceanu, came a day before the meeting with the representatives of the liberal branches, with a categorical message for his political opponents, saying he would not step out from the party's leadership. Referring to Theodor Stolojan's statement, Tariceanu assured that he appreciated the former PNL leader. Although, he said he did not quite understand all the phrases in Stolojan's statement. "I am always interested in his opinion. It's not the right time for political games now, in the context of the crisis generated by the floods ", PNL leader added.
