Odessa hosts debate on Romanian-Ukrainian difficulties

Kiev's support to the Romanian community in Ukraine is insufficient, said Romanian foreign minister Mihai Razvan-Ungureanu last Monday. The Romanian official is attending the first round of bilateral negotiations between Romania and Ukraine. Odessa is hosting the event meant to settle the difficulties in the relations between the two states. It was the President of Romania Traian Basescu and the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko who decided it during the Black Sea Forum that took place in Bucharest.

Here are some of the matters to be settled: the delimitation of the two states' continental plateaus and exclusive economic areas in the Black Sea, the Romanian-Ukrainian collaboration on the rights of the Romanian community in Ukraine and the Ukrainian community in Romania and the evolution of talks meant to put an end to the Transdniester conflict. Ungureanu on the Romanian language again

Before meeting the Ukrainian foreign minister, the Romanian official pleaded in front of the representatives of the Romanian community in Ukraine that the State University of Odessa should start teaching in Romanian and improve education in Romanian in the State University of Ismail.

In Odessa there are 9 schools where students are taught in Romanian. There are also 9 joint schools and one high school providing education in Romanian. In Odessa there are 1,700 students learning Romanian as compulsory and there are 500 students to whom the Romanian language is optional, Rompres reminds. The Romanian community in Ukraine includes about 410,000 members.

Acknowledgement for the BOR in Ukraine

The minister also took up the representation of the BOR (Romanian Orthodox Church) in states with large communities of Romanians. He emphasized the need to achieve means of dialogue so that the BOR, thought to be the non-governmental institution best represented abroad, would be officially acknowledged in Ukraine. Minister Ungureanu expressed intention to attend the next meeting of the Holy Synod and talk about how to make good use of the BOR potential abroad. (...) (D.E.)
