CRP debate on misinformation for press

Yesterday CRP (the Romanian Press Club) had debate on latest misinformation for the press. CRP president Cristian Tudor Popescu said there was need of such debate because Romania was facing hard times with both journalists and authorities making big mistakes.

Cristian Tudor Popescu opined that to arrest Marian Garleanu was an "aberrant" measure and release was the normal thing to do. He said the whole story with the military information on the CD was attempt to ruin the press.

Right now prosecutors are watching several journalists working for Romania libera and ZIUA, with view to the military information leak.

Basescu regrets the journalist in Focsani was arrested

Cristian Tudor Popescu outlined he had talked to state officials about the event and explained: "The latest very unpleasant events with journalists arrested makes us - owners, NGO representatives, press representatives, people who are not members of CRP - gather together to find means journalists can use to do their job under no pressure, so that investigators can do their job too." He also mentioned Romanian president Traian Basescu regretted "what happened to the journalist in Focsani." (...)

Press's responsibility

(...) CRP decided to give more thought to the public expression of press deontology. CRP is to present regular public reports about cases related to journalists' deontology and get involved in arranging and supporting professional sessions that would improve the knowledge of it. (D.E.I.)
