Double Iliescu

Iliescu is changing politics @ He is going to play double role: he will get involved in the PSD (The Socialist - Democrat Party) election campaign and he will not give up Romanian president position @ The President stated he would go and talk to the crowd in his "leisure time" @ He added: "I shall see how I can plead for my Senate candidacy. The institution is not getting involved in this election campaign". @ "There is a law on parliamentary elections. I have agreed to participate in elections and this entitles me to participate in the election campaign also", stated the president, despite Opposition protests. @ Given the circumstances, the President has got at least one problem: to explain what funds he will use for election campaign. PSD and Hrebenciuc first of all have carefully planed Iliescu's action ever since elaborating the law on parliamentary elections. @ But anyway the President did the same in the local elections campaign, when he pain official visits in order to support Nastase's party.

President Iliescu gladly agreed to the PSD (The Socialist - Democrat Party) invitation to get involved in the election campaign during his mandate as president. Yesterday the Romanian president stated he was glad to serve the party that had made him a politician before the end of mandate. But Iliescu is breaking the fundamental law. The supreme argument he is relying on in his campaign for the ruling party is that the Constitution does not explicitly say that the President of Romania has not got the right to get involved in election campaign.

Basescu: "Anyway, PSD isn't going to win elections, despite Iliescu's involvement"

Traian Basescu, leader of the PNL (The National Liberal Party) - PD (The Democrat party) Alliance and candidate to presidency stated at the end of this week that the election involvement if the state president would not help PSD win autumn elections. Basescu claimed that Iliescu's participation in election campaign would show that the state president was not the president for all Romanians, but only a president of PSD. "If he confirms what Cozmanca has said and gets involved in the election campaign, he will show he is just the president of PSD, not of all Romanians. Even so, PSD isn't going to win elections, despite Iliescu's involvement", pointed the Alliance leader. (R.A.)

Emil Boc, Executive President of PD (The Democrat Party):

"The state president's involvement in campaign is deeply non - constitutional and breaks Constitution regulation. The fundamental law clearly specifies that the state president must be the guarantor of law obedience and must have no bias. He is the first person forgetting the Constitution and interpreting its texts in favor of one political party. On the other hand, president Ion Iliescu must not forget he is independent candidate on the lists of a political party and must get rid of all political connotations. The most elegant solution would be Iliescu to resign as state president during the election campaign and the second man in states take his place, that is the President of the Senate. And there is one more solution: Iliescu should tun as independent candidate without being present on party lists. It is a pity indeed that Iliescu believes that Constitution obedience is a whim, just as he thought of giving back confiscated assets. And there is also the constitutional procedure oh suspension, but it asks for a very long time and the election campaign would end till this procedure got completed. Ion Iliescu knows this and takes full advantage of it. (R.A.)
