Press "coup"

Yesterday afternoon "Romania libera" newspaper headquarters hosted a failing attempt of the WAZ owner to replace newspaper editors in chief. Journalists stopped working for 4 hours because of malfunctions at leading board level. But it was especially because they were introduced to a new team of editors-in-chief, different from the one led by editor-in-chief Bogdan Ficeac.

Journalists had little knowledge about what was going on, except for hall rumors. Romulus Cristea, Union leader of journalists working for "Romania libera" stated: "At 12 p.m. we were informed that former rulers had been dismissed and a new desk was to be chosen. It was a spontaneous move by editors who refused to go on working from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. We did not know the new board or those who had chosen them. They have no official document. Mr. Bacanu has said they are on no legal grounds and they showed us no paper".

"We'll have to find solution unless they work"

Because of confusion about the new board, at 3 p.m. the idea that each team would print its own newspaper versions had already spread. Despite it, all journalists were only working for the old board, led by Petre Mihai Bacanu. The technical team also refused obedience to the new team, although at a certain moment Klaus Overbeck and some loyal journalists tried to block themselves inside to prevent release of newspaper under the editor team led by Bacanu and Ficeac.

When asked about means of dialogue with journalists in case they opposed changes, Klaus Overbeck, the owner's representatives, stated: " We'll have to find solution unless they work. We must make sure the newspaper is produced". But around 5 p.m. the dice was cast: the coup failed and editors-in-chief Bacanu and Ficeac coordinated the today's edition of "Romania libera".

Journalists employed by "Romania libera" accuse political rulers

In a press release addressed to all central publications, journalists employed by "Romania libera" claimed: "Petre Mihai Bacanu, legally elected President of the General Assembly Council "Romania libera" Shareholders informed employees that Mr. Klaus Overbeck and other persons introducing themselves as members of the Administration Council, different from the members elected and registered in documents, had not juridical grounds or executive position to have the right to order employees. Given the circumstances, employees do not have to obey any order from the above - mentioned people. Despite facts, by breaking law Mr. Overbeck and his partners (some journalists among them), locked inside an office, were planning to release another newspaper version at the same time, without P. M. Bacanu and present newspaper employees. Insistence to annihilate our newspaper's criticism is a warning about the way the press freedom principle is applied in Romania. And the attempt to create a parallel newspaper version is the desperate attempt of rulers' allies to provide ruler with well-meaning, "positive" press, as these days the fate of Romanian democracy will be decided".
