The presumption of guilt
Romanians are famous for their skills in discrediting. We have managed to discredit several ideas one by one: the idea of reform and the notion of hope, the word "change" and even the holy term "democracy", in the eyes of too many citizens. This is because we do all things upside down. For the sake of winning elections, political class representatives go in advance. They tell electors the approximate time when their hope is to be met and after the end of the...   (3 afisari)

The chimera of Russia's gas power
Russia began 2006 by cutting off natural gas exports to Ukraine after its government refused to pay a fourfold increase in the subsidized price. The crisis in Ukraine, many of whose Soviet-era industries depend on cheap Russian gas, soon spread to Europe, which consumes 80% of Russian gas exports, when Ukraine began to divert gas from the pipeline that crosses its territory.
Ironically, 2006 is also the year that Russia takes over the chair of the...   (3 afisari)

Harassment in Rompetrol case continues

When entering the Prosecutor's Office, the businessman said he was dissatisfied with the inquiry. He explained: "They have been harassing us with the same questions for 2 years now. I think it's time we got to a court who can reach decision, as we trust our innocence." After his meeting with prosecutors he reiterated...   (5 afisari)

Corruption Academy
The first lesson a future magistrate is to learn from professors in CSM (the Superior Council of Magistrates) is not on how to obey the law, but on how to cheat on it. The examination for admission in the National Institute of Magistrates provides applicants with the opportunity to become a judge or a prosecutor by fishy means smelling like corruption. The system conceived by Lupascu's CSM, toughly criticized at each and every exam session, reached the climax. One candidate...   (4 afisari)

Geoana says Basescu is silly
PSD (the Social-Democrat Party) leader Mircea Geoana is trying to muffle the scandal in the party, as he is scared at the PSD's score getting lower in opinion polls because of the scandals on "aunt Tamara" and Dan Ioan Popescu's fortune. In order to divert public attention from these hot issues, yesterday in Sfantu Gheorghe he opened two lines for attack: nationalism and president Traian Basescu's clumsiness in foreign affairs. Geoana's interest in regaining...   (1 afisare)

Communism sentenced
Romania is in great need of a law to denounce communism, just as all former Communist states now in the EU do, said PPCD (the Popular Christian-Democrat Party) vice president Zoea Radulescu yesterday. She mentioned she had written to Goran Lindblad, a MEP from the European People's Party, asking him for support to unmask Communist crimes and sentence the regime. (...)
She admitted a trial on communism was impossible to achieve in Romania, because the political...   (1 afisare)
