The President of Romania Traian Basescu announced last Thursday that he would demand political parties to meet him in Cotroceni palace for consultations if 6 out of 7 Romanians voted for his version of the uninominal vote system in Sunday's referendum. Except for the Democrats and Liberal-Democrats, parties are not fond of the idea because they are skeptical about the initiative's success. It is to be noticed that the head of state is counting on the presence of many Romanians in the referendum and on their support for his approach. The Democrats are standing by him like usually, claiming it is a way to show respect for the wish of Romanians. Democrat Vasile Blaga commented: "It is a very good initiative. One can't ignore the will of some 6-7 million Romanians." Still the President mentioned he would promulgate the government's version of the uninominal vote law if the Constitution Court reached decision that the project was a constitutional one Parties are skeptical The other parties' representatives have proved no enthusiasm about the idea. Cristian Diaconescu, a vice president of the PSD (Social-Democrat Party), claimed the President had to prove the usefulness of such consultations. As for Conservative Codrut Seres, he argued the President was trying to persuade everyone into thinking that his solution was the best, although he was not right. (...) (C.A.)
