The PSD (Social-Democrat Party) leader, Mircea Geoana, claims that the value of the airships the Presidency intends to buy, estimated to 300 M Euro, is almost equal to the amount needed from the 2008 budget to supplement the state securities budget with increased pensions, i.e. 400 M Euro. Geoana says, in a press statement, that the intention of the Romanian Presidency to purchase super-equipped but extremely expensive presidential airships proves once more, if need were, that president Traian Basescu's opposition to the endorsement of the Pension Law and the arguments regarding economic and financial prudence represents nothing but "a cruel indifference" towards the millions of pensioners he put off with fine promises in the electoral campaigns.
The PSD president asks the Executive to apply the two legislative pieces the PSD Government adopted in 2004 (train tickets free of charge for the pensioners and a supplementary pension for the surviving spouse), as the PNL (National Liberal Party) -PD power has unreasonably postponed their application. That is why these provisions have been included now in law that has been endorsed and which must become effective, according to Geoana. (R.A.)
