Romania's foreign minister Adrian Cioroianu started his 2-day visit in the US last Tuesday. Yesterday while in Washington he had a meeting with the US state secretary Condoleezza Rice as well as with more officials of the Bush Administration.
Yesterday morning the Romanian official talked to Gordon England, a deputy secretary of defense, and later on he was to meet with Condoleezza Rice. In the afternoon the Romanian minister had a meeting with senator Joseph Lieberman, a head of the Senate Committee for Homeland Security and later on with members of the group for friendship with Romania in the House of Representatives.
Adrian Cioroianu's visit to the US is part of Romania's new status as member of the EU and of the country's continuous cooperation with the US and more states allied in battlefields. There is to be mentioned that the visit is taking place at times of preparations for the arrival of the first US soldiers to the US military facilities in Romania and of complex dialogue with Washington authorities on regional and international matters. In April 2008 Bucharest is to house the NATO Summit.
On the Romanian minister's agenda there are the main issues related to bilateral relations between the two states and more regional and international matters: Romania's chance to join the Visa Waiver programme, coordination for the NATO Summit in 2008, collaboration in the global campaign against international terrorism, military cooperation and cooperation meant to consolidate regional and international stability.
