The visit to Serbia is highly symbolical and illustrative of the traditional relations and especially of the relations we want to have with Serbia in the future. We believe Serbia is the key to peace in the Western Balkans, said Romanian President Traian Basescu yesterday, before setting out for Serbia.
The President of Romania explained: "It is no secret that one issue to be tackled is the approach of President Boris Tadic and PM Vojislav Kostunica on Serbia's future evolution, related to the integration in the NATO and the EU." Given the highly important economic objectives on the Danube that Romania and Serbia handle and the prospects for consolidated economic relations, the development of bilateral relations is one of the aims. The President added: "Not last, we are interested in the view on the Kosovo issue expressed by the most important political leaders in Belgrade".
Traian Basescu's visit to Serbia is the first official visit a head of state is paying to this country after its separation from Montenegro. (A.H.)
