The avian flu virus has reached Europe via Turkey and Romania, as the European Commission confirmed on Saturday. EU health ministers are to have a meeting in Great Britain in October 20-21 to elaborate strategy to avoid the spreading of avian flu to humans. EU ministers of foreign affairs are also meeting tomorrow in Brussels for talks. On Saturday EU Commissioner for Health Markos Kyprianou made the announcement in Brussels, saying the H5N1 was confirmed, informs Reuters. (...) The EU official mentioned EU veterinary experts were to meet this week for evaluation. He also informed that the EU had already been taking into consideration the presence of the H5N1 in Romania and the appropriate prevention measures had therefore been taken. (...) Barroso promises more drastic measures The European Parliament president Jose Durao Barroso in Spain wanted to calm down EU members, although when making his statement he had not been informed about the confirmation of the H5N1 virus in Romania, similar to the one in Turkey and Asia. The EU official announced in Saturday that Brussels officials would not hesitate to ask member states for more drastic and radical measures. Barroso mentioned: "We are prepared to do everything to inform European and international public opinion about this state of things most transparently." (...)
