Mediafax quotes EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn, who stated yesterday that the European Commission would give "yellow cards" to Romania and Bulgaria because of delays in the implementation of reforms required for accession to the EU. The EU official said: "Warnings will focus on reform flaws obvious in both countries."
Olli Rehn also outlined that the EU enlargement process would continue, despite the French and Dutch no vote on the European Constitution.
The EU official mentioned as well: "We are going to continue the enlargement policy by emphasizing the need to strictly obey admission criteria and by better communication with our citizens on the global consequences of enlargement". He also added that the EU enlargement process would not be abandoned because of no votes on the European Constitution.
Delays in accomplishing reforms need with view to the EU accession put Romania under the "major risk" of failing to join the EU in January 1st 2007. This was the warning released yesterday by Jonathan Scheele, Head of the EU delegation to Romania, during the EPP (the European People's Party) reunion in Bucharest. (D.E.)
