President Basescu stated on Wednesday evening the change effected after the German elections would in no way influence Romania's accession to the European Union in January 1 2007, says Rompres. During the meeting with students set by Pro Democracy association, Basescu stated: " I know that we are generally very emotional when a declaration, a change or any opinion is expressed. But Romania signed an international treaty already ratified by the Parliament. This treaty sets rights and obligations for both sides." The Romanian President opined that the political changes in one country or the other, just as positive or negative evolutions in a state or the other could not influence the use of the EU Accession Treaty. Basescu mentioned: "The only thing that can prevent Romania's accession to the EU in January 1 2007 is Romania's failure in meeting the requirements it has taken responsibility for during negotiations. Anything else is just political statements. We have already got an international treaty that will become a law for both sides." The Internet page novinite.com announced on Tuesday that Germany would not ratify the EU accession treaties of Romania and Bulgaria this autumn as set, because of Chancellor Gerhard Schroder's intention to demand early elections. Germany was one of the first EU states that would have ratified the EU accession treaties with Romania and Bulgaria. Schroder is going to come with procedure of confidence to the Parliament before July 1st, during the last parliamentary session before summer holidays. If it gets rejected, German President Horst Kohler has got 21 days available to dissolve the Parliament. General elections must follow after 60 days at most, which means September 18 the latest.
